No limits to a mother’s love, a wrestler’s determination

Judy Robles was 16 when she found out she was pregnant with her first child, who would later be born with only one leg. As Anthony Robles grew, his mom realized that he defied limitations — "he was going to figure things out." Anthony went on to become an NCAA champion wrestler at ASU, and his life story is now the focus of a new Amazon Prime movie, “Unstoppable."

When Natasha Adair drove to the basket for a layup one October night in 1990, her future was right in front of her. She was a high school senior being recruited by more than 200 college coaches. But as she landed on the court and heard the pop in her knee, everything changed. Adair couldn’t have known then, but that injury headed her down a path that would eventually lead her to become the women’s basketball coach at ASU. “People often ask me if I would change what happened,” she said. “No. It made me who I am.”

Growing up in Puerto Rico, where sports are embedded in the culture, Chanel Zapata developed a passion for baseball early in life. The San Juan native left Puerto Rico to attend the University of Tampa, but her sights remained firmly set on a career in baseball. So when she heard about ASU's master of sports law and business program, she knew it would be the perfect fit.

The healing power of pursuing a dream

When Billy Mills beat the pack on a muddy cinder track in the 10,000-meter race at the 1964 Olympics in Tokyo, his graceful steps belied a difficult emotional journey. The Oglala Lakota spoke about heritage and resilience at an event Thursday titled “Indigenous Identity and the Athletic Experience with Billy Mills,” sponsored by the Alliance of Indigenous Peoples, the Global Sport Institute and the Center for the Study of Race and Democracy.



ASU men's basketball to play in 2019 Pac-12 China game

Arizona State University’s global footprint keeps expanding, including on the basketball court. The Pac-12 announced a 2019 men's basketball matchup between ASU and the University of Colorado Boulder, the fifth edition of the Pac-12 China Game presented by Alibaba Group. The November 2019 game will be co-hosted by longtime Pac-12 partner Federation of University Sports of China, which operates under China’s Ministry of Education.
