No limits to a mother’s love, a wrestler’s determination

Judy Robles was 16 when she found out she was pregnant with her first child, who would later be born with only one leg. As Anthony Robles grew, his mom realized that he defied limitations — "he was going to figure things out." Anthony went on to become an NCAA champion wrestler at ASU, and his life story is now the focus of a new Amazon Prime movie, “Unstoppable."

When Natasha Adair drove to the basket for a layup one October night in 1990, her future was right in front of her. She was a high school senior being recruited by more than 200 college coaches. But as she landed on the court and heard the pop in her knee, everything changed. Adair couldn’t have known then, but that injury headed her down a path that would eventually lead her to become the women’s basketball coach at ASU. “People often ask me if I would change what happened,” she said. “No. It made me who I am.”

New research from Arizona State University is showing that when it comes to the bang-bang plays in baseball, viewing distance from the play is critical for judging what actually happened. In other words, the umpire being much closer to the action is in a better position to make the right call compared with a fan in the stands 100 or 200 feet away.

Fifty years after his shocking protest against racism on the medal podium at the Olympics in Mexico City, John Carlos has seen the vicious backlash he endured at the time evolve over the decades into admiration and respect. Carlos and others with a connection to those games spoke Tuesday night at an ASU talk about sports and protest called “Raising a Fist to Taking a Knee."

ASU Law student helps high school students learn what it takes to break into the sports industry

Having achieved his dream of working in the sports industry, a student at the Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law at ASU is helping local high schoolers do the same. Zade Shakir launched the Emerging Sports Leaders Program this fall. Through the program, Shakir and other ASU Law students help teach a sports law class at Scottsdale’s Horizon High School, explaining the behind-the-scenes sports world while giving specific guidance on how to get into the highly competitive industry.

After graduating high school, Avital Jaloba — now a freshman on the Arizona State volleyball team — was responsible for defending more than the net on a court. She was one of many responsible for defending a nation.
