No limits to a mother’s love, a wrestler’s determination

Judy Robles was 16 when she found out she was pregnant with her first child, who would later be born with only one leg. As Anthony Robles grew, his mom realized that he defied limitations — "he was going to figure things out." Anthony went on to become an NCAA champion wrestler at ASU, and his life story is now the focus of a new Amazon Prime movie, “Unstoppable."

When Natasha Adair drove to the basket for a layup one October night in 1990, her future was right in front of her. She was a high school senior being recruited by more than 200 college coaches. But as she landed on the court and heard the pop in her knee, everything changed. Adair couldn’t have known then, but that injury headed her down a path that would eventually lead her to become the women’s basketball coach at ASU. “People often ask me if I would change what happened,” she said. “No. It made me who I am.”

Athletics. “I embrace situations that are challenging and force me out of my comfort zone,” said Victoria Jackson, a lecturer in the School of Historical, Philosophical and Religious Studies at Arizona State University.

New 365 campaign aims to take Sun Devil Stadium into the future

A new fundraising campaign kicked off Oct. 14 to take Sun Devil Stadium to the next level of transformation with the goal of turning the nearly 60-year-old landmark into a year-round hub of activity the entire community can enjoy. The ASU 365 Community Union campaign seeks to raise $40 million that will be used to fund elements needed to create a successful venue with amenities that will attract not only the ASU community but also residents from surrounding cities.

Enshrining a legend

A gleaming bronze statue of Pat Tillman — who played football at ASU before sacrificing his life as an Army Ranger — was unveiled Wednesday evening in a ceremony at Sun Devil Stadium attended by Tillman family, ASU leaders and football players. Kevin Tillman told the crowd that his brother’s likeness is everywhere at ASU but that the university had a big impact on Pat as well. “Pat spent his whole life trying to be the best person he could be. ... And ASU gave him the opportunity to do that.”

ASU wins Best Game Day Technology Experience honor

The National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and CDW-G, a leading provider of technology solutions to education, government and health care, have announced Arizona State University as the winner of the inaugural Best Game Day Technology Experience Award. ASU was chosen from a pool of three finalists and received the award for its “Smart Campus” initiative.
