No limits to a mother’s love, a wrestler’s determination

Judy Robles was 16 when she found out she was pregnant with her first child, who would later be born with only one leg. As Anthony Robles grew, his mom realized that he defied limitations — "he was going to figure things out." Anthony went on to become an NCAA champion wrestler at ASU, and his life story is now the focus of a new Amazon Prime movie, “Unstoppable."

When Natasha Adair drove to the basket for a layup one October night in 1990, her future was right in front of her. She was a high school senior being recruited by more than 200 college coaches. But as she landed on the court and heard the pop in her knee, everything changed. Adair couldn’t have known then, but that injury headed her down a path that would eventually lead her to become the women’s basketball coach at ASU. “People often ask me if I would change what happened,” she said. “No. It made me who I am.”

ASU students gain career experience in a different kind of spring training

One year ago, the looming COVID-19 pandemic cut short Major League Baseball's spring training. The cancellation interrupted an important opportunity for several ASU students who worked at the stadiums to get career experience. This year, spring training is back. Many things are different — fewer fans, more safety protocols — but the players are still on the field, and ASU students are again getting the chance to learn professional skills in the sports world.

For many, Super Bowl Sunday is a junk food junket, a day filled with chips, chicken wings and extravagant spreads — but not for ASU alumna Stephanie Kolloff O’Neill. On her Super Bowl Sunday this February, Kolloff O’Neill spent the day on the sideline at Tampa Bay’s Raymond James Stadium, where she kept the players of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers team fueled up with wholesome snacks and sports drinks throughout the game as they dominated the Kansas City Chiefs with a 31-9 win in Super Bowl LV.
