No limits to a mother’s love, a wrestler’s determination

Judy Robles was 16 when she found out she was pregnant with her first child, who would later be born with only one leg. As Anthony Robles grew, his mom realized that he defied limitations — "he was going to figure things out." Anthony went on to become an NCAA champion wrestler at ASU, and his life story is now the focus of a new Amazon Prime movie, “Unstoppable."

When Natasha Adair drove to the basket for a layup one October night in 1990, her future was right in front of her. She was a high school senior being recruited by more than 200 college coaches. But as she landed on the court and heard the pop in her knee, everything changed. Adair couldn’t have known then, but that injury headed her down a path that would eventually lead her to become the women’s basketball coach at ASU. “People often ask me if I would change what happened,” she said. “No. It made me who I am.”

ASU Law to host mock NBA trade competition in November

Students with a head for business and a passion for sports will be happy to learn of a first-of-its-kind event being hosted by the Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law at Arizona State University this November. The Mock NBA Trade Deadline Competition will take place Nov. 2–4 at the Beus Center for Law and Society in downtown Phoenix.

Justin Roehl wanted to play football for Arizona State University. He made the team, but an injury ultimately sidelined his playing career. Yet he still managed to contribute to the Sun Devils’ success by working with players in the team weight room as part of his academic studies.

A return to Camp Tontozona

Longtime Sun Devil Football fan Rudy Burgoz has been coming to Camp Tontozona, just outside Payson, Arizona, since 1961 — just one year after Coach Frank Kush brought the Sun Devils up north for the first time. This August, the football team returned to the practice fields here for the first time since 2019. Coach Kenny Dillingham wanted to reinstate the tradition; he believes a team can bond when it’s together for days, robbed of distractions.
