Belle Edson has inspired countless students to expand their horizons during her 26-year tenure at Arizona State University. A beloved professor and director of undergraduate studies and core courses at the Hugh Downs School of Human Communication, Belle leads the school's Summer Study Abroad Communication Program — one of her most cherished contributions to her students' educations.

In 2025, Edson will lead her final study abroad program before her well-deserved retirement. To honor her profound impact, the Belle A. Edson Study Abroad Scholarship has been established. This scholarship ensures that future students can continue to embark on these life-changing journeys, just as Edson envisioned.

“Study abroad isn’t just about visiting new places — it’s about stepping into new cultures, broadening your understanding of the world, and creating experiences that change you forever,” Edson said.

The Summer Study Abroad Communication Program takes students on a transformative journey through London, Dublin and Edinburgh. This program, one of ASU's most popular faculty-led initiatives, allows participants to explore communication in diverse cultural contexts.

Known for her dedication to education, Edson has been a guiding force in developing curriculum and mentoring students as they prepare for their future. She has been a cornerstone of the Hugh Downs School, teaching undergraduate courses in theory and rhetoric while shaping the academic paths of her students.

Edson's journey at ASU began in 1998 as a senior lecturer, and over the years, she has held multiple leadership roles within the Hugh Downs School, culminating in her current position, which she has held since 2007. In each of these roles, she has been vital to the growth and development of the school.

Edson's vision has shaped the lives of her many students, and through the Belle A. Edson Study Abroad Scholarship, her legacy will now enable many more to experience the wonders of global education.
