The Institute for Humanities Research (IHR) at Arizona State University has announced that it will be renamed the Humanities Institute (HI), effective immediately. The purpose of the name change is to align with other ASU centers, as well as the naming practices of other universities that are part of the more than 300 members of the Consortium of Humanities Centers and Institutes (CHCI). HI is housed in The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at ASU.

“The acronym HI is welcoming and approachable, which fits the hospitable ethos of the institute,” says the Humanities Institute Director Ron Broglio. “The name 'Humanities Institute' foregrounds the humanities, calling attention to both our mission and central focus.”

“We are excited about the name change and the rebranding that will roll out in the next few weeks,” says Curtis Austin, associate director of the Humanities Institute. “Although our name will change, our vision and mission will remain the same.”

Established in 2005, HI encourages transdisciplinary research that contributes to five initiatives — sports@IHR, "blue" humanities, applied theory, health humanities and desert humanities — and encourages community outreach and involvement.

HI continues to provide professionalization opportunities to the humanities community, with ongoing publishing and grant-writing workshops, events and presentations with notable visiting scholars, an annual book award and a distinguished lecture series. HI also provides funding in the form of grants and fellowships to advance the scholarly writing and research of ASU humanities faculty. HI’s seed grant program helps research faculty bring their ideas to life and apply for external funding to advance their projects.

The Humanities Institute supports research and creative engagement with what it means to be human in a constantly changing world. HI connects university and partner communities in celebrating the best of what the humanities can accomplish across cultures, time and space.
