Changemaker Central at Arizona State University is all about leading social change in our local and global community, and the initiative’s recent mixer event empowered students to follow that mission and make a real difference.

The Connect for Impact: Nonprofit Expo and Networking Mixer on Oct. 19 provided ASU students with the opportunity to engage with a diverse range of nonprofit organizations, learn about their inspiring missions, and build connections that can lead to volunteer opportunities, internships and careers.

“Our main aim is to create awareness about the volunteer opportunities that are present on the campus and others around the city as well. It connects the students with a ton of nonprofit organizations,” said Shiksha Mishra, an international student studying business management at ASU’s W. P. Carey School of Business and a student leader at Changemaker Central. “Community service is one of the most popular activities that students take up, so we want to create awareness of the plethora of opportunities that are available to students here at ASU.”

Some of the nonprofit and volunteer-based organizations involved in the Connect for Impact event included Volunteer PHX, Habitat for Humanity and Child Crisis Arizona.

“I think making a difference is really important; even a single person's contribution makes a huge impact,” Mishra said. “In this fast-paced world, I think it's important for us to realize how important it is to give back to the community. We are the future, so I think each one of us should be a changemaker and initiate even the smallest, tiniest change.”

Students interested in giving back can attend the upcoming Changemaker Central event — Give Thanks, Give Back Service Day — happening during Veteran’s Day weekend. The Nov. 10–12 event highlights the importance of service, celebrates the commitment of changemakers, and reinforces the values of empathy, compassion and civic engagement.
