Arizona State University is ranked 40th in the U.S. among top universities by QS World University Rankings for 2024 — up from 47th in the 2023 rankings — and ahead of Dartmouth, Georgetown and Notre Dame.
In addition, ASU:
• Ranked 179th globally, out of 1,500 institutions, a jump of 40 spots.
• Ranked first in Arizona, ahead of the University of Arizona (54th in the U.S.) and Northern Arizona University (150th).
• Ranked 20th among U.S. public universities, up two spots from last year and ahead of Virginia; University of California, Irvine; and Rutgers.
The ranking company, Quacquarelli Symonds, is a provider of services, analytics and insight to the global higher education sector. The QS World University Rankings launched in 2004 and has become a popular source of comparative data about university performance.
The rankings are based on a methodology that looks at several key indicators, including academic reputation, citations per faculty, faculty-student ratio and international faculty ratio. This was the 20th edition of the rankings and included three new indicators: sustainability, employment outcomes and international research network.
In the U.S., ASU ranked eighth for sustainability (with a score of 97.3 out of 100), 18th for international research network, 37th for employer reputation and 39th for international student ratio.
"Our consistent year-over-year rise in the QS ranking serves as further evidence of the exceptional academic experience that ASU provides for our global community of students and scholars," said Nancy Gonzales, executive vice president and university provost.
"In particular, ASU's high sustainability score within this ranking is a reminder of our role as a sector leader in creating global impact through the use-inspired research of our faculty and the creative endeavors of our students. ASU's reputation as a leading global university continues to grow, and our entire academic community should take pride in our accomplishments."
The top 10 ranked U.S. universities were Massachusetts Institute of Technology; Harvard; Stanford; University of California, Berkeley; University of Chicago; University of Pennsylvania; Cornell; California Institute of Technology; Yale and Princeton.
Globally, the top 10 universities on the rankings are: Massachusetts Institute of Technology; University of Cambridge; University of Oxford; Harvard; Stanford; Imperial College London; ETH Zurich; National University of Singapore; University College London; and the University of California, Berkeley.
