Patrick Kenney, dean of The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Arizona State University, has been named executive vice provost of the Academic Enterprise.
His position will take effect on July 1. Kenney will continue to serve as dean of The College until a replacement is named.
Kenney, who earned his PhD in political science from the University of Iowa in 1983, has been a professor with ASU since 2001. He was a visiting scholar at Stanford University in May 2013, and he became a Foundation Professor at ASU in 2016.
As an administrator, Kenney has served in many roles, including: chair of the Department of Political Science, founding director of the School of Politics and Global Studies, associate vice president of social sciences in the Office of Knowledge Enterprise Development, director of the Institute for Social Science Research and dean of social sciences.
Kenney has served as dean of The College since 2014, and he has been vice provost for Academic Enterprise strategy since 2021.
"With decades of service to the university and a well-earned reputation as one of ASU's most trusted academic leaders, Pat will assume a crucial role in organizing and leading the ambitious goals we have set for ASU's Academic Enterprise," said Nancy Gonzales, executive vice president and university provost. "I express my gratitude to Pat for the valuable contributions made to our academic community during his tenure as the dean of The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
"Under Pat's guidance, The College has emerged as one of ASU's largest academic communities in terms of student enrollment, research expenditures, philanthropic endeavors, teaching innovations and faculty accomplishments. I eagerly anticipate the impact Pat will have as executive vice provost."
Throughout his career, Kenney has authored and co-authored a number of books and articles on campaigns, elections and voter behavior in American federal elections, and has received funding from the National Science Foundation.
“I have enjoyed tremendously helping guide The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences for over a decade. It has been my academic home for a very long time," Kenney said. "The faculty and staff in The College are outstanding across a range of dimensions, and I will miss the people a great deal. But I’m excited to work in the provost’s office and help with the challenges facing the Academic Enterprise.
"It is a privilege to work for and be appointed by Provost Gonzales.”
