School of Historical, Philosophical and Religious Studies welcomes 2 postdoctoral scholars

Michael Kenny (left) and Matthijs Tieleman join the School of Historical, Philosophical and Religious Studies as postdoctoral scholars.

Arizona State University’s School of Historical, Philosophical and Religious Studies is welcoming two new postdoctoral scholars beginning this fall. Both of them will be working with the political history and leadership program and will be teaching a variety of history courses.

Michael Kenny

Michael Kenny is joining the faculty from the University of California, San Diego, where he earned his PhD in 2020 and was a teaching assistant. He has presented at numerous conferences and is the recipient of the Croatian Academy of America George Štambuk Memorial Scholarship and a Fulbright-Mach Fellowship in Austria.

His research includes political history and the history of political ideologies in modern Central and Eastern Europe and his doctoral dissertation focused on Catholic conservatism, Croatian nationalism and the Habsburg State Mission.

Matthijs Tieleman

Matthijs Tieleman joins the faculty after working as a teaching assistant at the University of California, Los Angeles where he earned his PhD in 2021. He has presented at many conferences; has published multiple articles, including one in The Washington Postand has earned over 20 awards and grants. Most recently, he received a research travel grant from the Forum on Early-Modern Empires and Global Interaction

His research focuses on the 18th-century Atlantic world, and he is currently working on a book manuscript that examines the trans-Atlantic connections between the revolutionary patriot movements in North America, Ireland and the Netherlands during that time.
