ASU among the nation’s top recipients of federal funding for social, behavioral science research

The Consortium of Social Science Associations (COSSA) has ranked the top university recipients of federal funding for social and behavioral science research, and Arizona State University comes in 10th in the U.S. ASU recently was ranked fifth in the U.S. by the National Science Foundation for social science research expenditures, alongside Harvard University.

“Social and behavioral science research has always been a key part of the transdisciplinary solutions that result in a strong societal impact," said Sethuraman Panchanathan, executive vice president of Knowledge Enterprise Development and chief research and innovation officer at ASU. "We are fortunate to have a strong group of faculty and researchers who are not only making pioneering contributions to their disciplines but are also creating global impact through a solutions-focused transdisciplinary approach. A top spot in the Consortium of Social Science Associations rankings validates this spirit.”

A total of 452 colleges and universities are included in the rankings, which are based on federally collected data. The current rankings reflect spending from fiscal year 2015.

“Although the social and behavioral sciences may be among the more overlooked STEM fields, these rankings reflect the important contributions of federally funded social science research at our nation’s most prestigious research universities,” said Wendy Naus, COSSA executive director.
