Kiesling's first class at ASU didn't waste any time getting into the course work. The freshman from outside of Chicago looks up to the periodic table as she tries to figure out the atomic mass of copper during an exercise assigned by her instructor on Sept. 9.

Kiesling wants to be a nurse, which means she needs a strong background in chemistry. Here, she learns the basics of cations and atomic mass from principal lecturer Richard Baurer during her Intro to Chemistry course in the Walter Cronkite School building on the Downtown Phoenix campus.

The first class was just the beginning of this nursing student's path toward a degree. With that start now behind her, Kiesling (center) leaves her Intro to Chemistry course and moves on to the next step of her academic journey.

As a freshman nursing student, Kiesling will spend a lot of time in labs. Her first hands-on experience took place Sept. 14 in her Chemistry 101 lab at the University Center on the Downtown Phoenix campus. The lesson began with Kiesling and her lab mates deciding what tools to use. With two years of chemistry in high school, Kiesling's lab mates turned to her for guidance.

Kiesling and her team listen to chemistry lab instructor Jett Feld as he lists the different types of tools students can use to conduct measurements. It might sound basic, but this is the foundation Kiesling and her fellow students will use to build the rest of this year's lab work upon.
