No limits to a mother’s love, a wrestler’s determination

Judy Robles was 16 when she found out she was pregnant with her first child, who would later be born with only one leg. As Anthony Robles grew, his mom realized that he defied limitations — "he was going to figure things out." Anthony went on to become an NCAA champion wrestler at ASU, and his life story is now the focus of a new Amazon Prime movie, “Unstoppable."

When Natasha Adair drove to the basket for a layup one October night in 1990, her future was right in front of her. She was a high school senior being recruited by more than 200 college coaches. But as she landed on the court and heard the pop in her knee, everything changed. Adair couldn’t have known then, but that injury headed her down a path that would eventually lead her to become the women’s basketball coach at ASU. “People often ask me if I would change what happened,” she said. “No. It made me who I am.”

Watts Center gives student-athletes support for academic, life skills

To be a student-athlete is to be busy. Much of their days must be spent training and competing on the field, and student-athletes have to balance that with time needed for classes and homework. Luckily, they have help. The Watts Center for Academic Excellence and Championship Life is home to the Office of Student-Athlete Development (OSAD), a vital component of the Sun Devil Athletics experience that provides academic and professional development support to student-athletes.

Cronkite School to host special event discussing diversity and media in the NFL

The Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University will host “On The Clock & In the Media: Race, Hiring and the NFL,” a panel discussion focusing on the complex challenges in the NFL.

Tom Harris, ASU alum and executive vice president and chief financial officer of the Arizona Diamondbacks, recently spoke to the Economic Club of Phoenix about the business of baseball.

A lab where sports and science meet

Work smarter, not harder: The ASU triathlon team is using science to do just that, and Arizona State University’s newest biomedical facility in downtown Phoenix is playing a part. ASU’s Translational Research Center at 850 PBC — part of the Phoenix Biomedical Campus — was the site of recent intensity training and lactate-threshold testing for the athletes, conducted by College of Health Solutions staff and students.
