Sun Devil men's lacrosse team starts home season Feb. 21
Arizona State University’s men’s lacrosse team, ranked number one in the nation in the preseason Men’s Collegiate Lacrosse Association (MCLA) poll, kicks off its 2014 home season Feb. 21 at a new venue on ASU’s West campus.
A recently added competition field on the West campus will host all six home games during the spring 2014 semester. Men’s lacrosse becomes the first Sun Devil sports club to make the West campus the site of its home games.
The public is invited to attend the games, which run through April 19. There is no admission charge.
Games will be played on the 6-acre competition multipurpose field on the south side of campus, which is part of the recently constructed Sun Devil Fitness Complex. The 63,000-square-foot fitness facility includes amenities such as a lap pool, indoor track, indoor racquet ball courts, strength and fitness areas and a two-court gymnasium. Additional outdoor facilities include volleyball and basketball courts.
The men’s lacrosse sports club has achieved success on the field, earning the title of champions of the Southwestern Lacrosse Conference three of the last four years, and advancing to the Final Four of the MCLA tournament five seasons in a row.
“Hosting the lacrosse sports club games at ASU’s West location brings another positive level of student engagement to our community,” said Sharon Smith, dean of students on the West campus. “A year ago we hosted two home lacrosse games, and large numbers of West students cheered on their Sun Devil team to two victories. There is a lot of enthusiasm on campus about the team making West its home for competition games, with student groups planning to tailgate at the games. This is also great news for the surrounding West Valley.”
ASU’s West campus is at 4701 W. Thunderbird Road in Phoenix.
The schedule for home games is:
• Feb. 21: University of Minnesota Duluth, 7 p.m.
• March 19: Sonoma State, 7 p.m.
• March 22: Simon Fraser, 2 p.m.
• March 25: University of Illinois, 7 p.m.
• April 12: San Diego State, 1 p.m.
• April 19: Grand Canyon University, 1 p.m.
