School of Criminology gives to four local families

The School of Criminology and Criminal Justice and Chicanos por la Casa continued a second-year partnership in giving to the community when more than 80 gifts were presented to families in need.

The school has adopted a family every year since 2006 and this year, the school was able to help four families. The families included a grandfather who to quit his job to support his daughters and grandchildren; parents with a toddler recently diagnosed with autism; a family of six who recently experienced a tragic loss; and a single father of four struggling to provide for his young children.

Heather Jacobs, program director at Chicano por la Casa, expressed her gratitude.

“This was a fabulous experience," she said. "We were able to help more families than anticipated.”

Food, clothing and basic need items were at the top of the families' request lists. Each family received $100 gift certificate to a local grocery store along with personalized gifts based on age and interest.

“The Criminology and Criminal Justice community went above and beyond this holiday season,” said Scott Decker, director of the School of Criminology and Criminal Justice. “I am so proud of the faculty, staff and honor student association Alpha Phi Sigma for their charity and hard work.”
