Pop photography joins local art at ASU Gammage exhibit

A talented Arizona photographer joins four other local artists who are exhibiting their artwork at ASU Gammage through March 5.

David Miller is presenting 25 large photos featuring fashion models in scenarios that straddle cinematic pop and surrealist art techniques. His striking images reflect the unseen forces in the world that affect us.

“In my youth the real world seemed inseparable from the cartoonish electronic universes of games, movies and comics [but] as an adult these feel equally alive,” says Miller.

“Photographic imagery has always been translated into fictional worlds via the type of camera or lens or filtration, or the chemistry used, the type of paper, the manipulation of the print or digital image and other means. My work represents the intersection of these unreal universes and real-world images.”

Also exhibiting are these artists, whose work has been on display since December:

• Allison Dunn, a painter whose work has been exhibited in galleries and museums throughout the U.S. and Italy, uses a synthesis of techniques, taking her cue stylistically from divergent art historical sources.

• Emily Matyas began her career as a photojournalist and later traveled to Sonora, Mexico, to work for Save the Children, a nonprofit community development program. There, she photographed extensively in several rural Mexican villages.

• Rebecca Ross’s photos have been widely exhibited in the U.S. and Europe, and are represented in many collections, including the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, Phoenix Office of Arts and Culture and Mayo Clinic Scottsdale.

• Kate Timmerman is a mixed media artist whose work explores the physicality of materials such as wax, pigment and wood as they support themes of solitude, memory, environment and relationships.

Exhibit hours at ASU Gammage are 1 to 4 p.m., Mondays, or by appointment. Due to rehearsals, event set-up, performances, special events and holidays, it is advisable to call (480) 965-6912 or (480) 965-0458 to ensure viewing hours, since they are subject to cancellation without notice.

The street address is 1200 S. Forest Ave., Tempe. Parking is available at meters around the perimeter of ASU Gammage. Entrance is through east lobby doors at the box office.
