Lecture offers global perspective of human sexuality
Two experienced university teachers will discuss the scope and diverse meanings of sexuality in a highly engaging presentation as part of the spring 2010 Humanities Lecture Series.
“Sexuality: Kaleidoscopic Perspectives” will be presented by Grace Galliano and Jackie Martinez at 6 p.m. Thursday, March 11 at ASU’s Nursing and Health Innovation Building II, 550 N. Third Street, Innovation Auditorium, room 110, at the Downtown Phoenix campus. The lecture series is free and open to the public.
“We have come up with a program that is engaging and interactive, and hope that minds and thinking will be expanded regarding this topic,” said Galliano, a faculty associate with the School of Letters and Sciences. Our questions about sexuality may be similar but our answers are often different. We encourage students and the community to bring their own questions and answers about sexuality, in all its forms.”
Galliano and Martinez will present their own perspectives and experiences in teaching, and continuing their study of, human sexuality. They will address how they conceptualize the scope of sexuality as a topic and the particular kinds of knowledge considered for inclusion. In addition, the speakers will address questions relating to teaching, such as issues of morality, cultural values and sexual ethics.
“Having an open, honest and informed public discourse on the topic of sexuality is essential to many aspects of the health and welfare of all society; the topic has forever been misrepresented and misunderstood," said Mirna Lattouf, a senior lecturer with the School of Letters and Sciences and organizer of the lecture series. "Doctors Galliano and Martinez will surely enlighten and entertain us. We hope everyone will join us for some serious discussion with some giggling in between."
