Law professor, alumni chosen for Bar Hall of Fame

Three people affiliated with the College of Law are among 10 lawyers and judges selected this year for induction into the Maricopa County Bar Association Hall of Fame.

They are:

Alan A. Matheson, dean dmeritus and professor of law at ASU, who arrived at the College of Law in 1967 to serve as Associate Dean. Matheson is known as an influential administrative leader and a beloved teacher. He also has compiled a remarkable record of service to the Bar, the community and the legal profession. 

Rebecca White Berch (Class of 1979), Chief Justice of the Arizona Supreme Court, a Professor and Director of the Legal Research and Writing Program at the College of Law. Berch, the third woman to serve as chief justice, also was Arizona Solicitor General and an appellate court judge.

Michael Daly Hawkins (Class of 1970), Judge on the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.  Hawkins served as president of the Maricopa County Bar Association 1987-88.

Other inductees include Janet Napolitano, U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security and former Arizona governor; Walter Cheifetz, one of the preeminent trial attorneys in the Southwest; Robert L. Gottsfield, a former judge of the Maricopa County Superior Court and a prolific author of legal articles and books; William R. Jones Jr., a strong advocate for worker’s compensation in Arizona; the Hon. Robert W. Pickrell, who served as Arizona Attorney General and a Superior Court judge, the Hon. Ernest McFarland, a former U.S. Senator and Chief Justice of the Arizona Supreme Court, and Jubal Early Craig who was instrumental in establishing the State Bar of Arizona in the 1930s.
