Hessick interviewed about SB 1070 injunction

Professor Andy Hessick discussed proceedings in U.S. District Court regarding whether a new injunction should be issued against SB 1070, during a segment on Channel 12, Aug. 22.

Civil rights groups have asked Judge Susan Bolton to stop Section 2B, the so-called “show me your papers” clause of Arizona’s controversial immigration-enforcement law. The clause requires police to attempt to determine the status of a person stopped, detained or arrested, if there is reasonable suspicion he or she is in the country illegally.

Hessick said a resolution in the courts is far from over. In June, the U.S. Supreme Court in a split decision ruled that three of four key parts of SB 1070 were unconstitutional, two years after the Arizona Legislature passed the measure and Gov. Jan Brewer signed it into law.

“There’s still a lot more to go before the final judgment on a permanent injunction is issued,” Hessick said.
