College Avenue Commons wins American design award

The Arizona affiliate of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) honored the College Avenue Commons building on Arizona State University's Tempe campus with the Goodwin Award on Saturday, Oct. 3. AIA Arizona presented the award at the Design Awards Gala held at the Phoenix Art Museum.
Each year, buildings in Arizona are eligible for 14 special awards from the AIA, including the Goodwin Award. The Goodwin Award honors projects built since January 2000 for the outstanding teamwork between a project’s architect, contractor and owner that exemplifies financial, aesthetic and design goals.
“ASU is committed to becoming one of the leading institutions in sustainable design with actual examples,” said Ed Soltero, ASU assistant vice president and university architect. “College Avenue Commons embodies this aspiration with its minimal glass design, chilled beam system and daylight harvesting louvers among other sustainable features.”
After opening in September 2014, College Avenue Commons is making use of recycled and low-energy construction materials, advanced LED lighting and exposed heating, and cooling systems. Gensler/Architekton designed the five-story, 137,000-square-foot facility that Okland Construction built.
In August 2015, College Avenue Commons earned a Gold LEED certification from the U.S. Green Building Council, which recognizes excellence in sustainable construction.
College Avenue Commons is home to the School of Sustainable Engineering, the Del E. Webb School of Construction, and the Built Environment, a school in the Ira A. Fulton School of Engineering. It also houses the Future Sun Devil Welcome Center and Sun Devil Marketplace. A Grab-and-Go market is located on the first floor while Pitchforks & Corks, a coffee-and-wine bar, is on the second floor.
College Avenue Commons has received other AIA achievements including the Phoenix Metro Design Award and the Western Mountain Region Design Award for excellence in design, construction and planning.
Based in Washington, DC, AIA has more than 300 state and local affiliates and is the leading professional membership association for licensed architects, emerging professionals and partners. The Arizona affiliate has three statewide chapters that include more than 1,400 members.
