Colangelo, Bartie to address sports law conference

The 3rd Annual Conference on Sports and Entertainment Law will feature a joint keynote by former Phoenix Suns owner Jerry Colangelo and Jared Bartie, an attorney who has served as vice president for Team Marketing and Business Operations for the National Basketball Association and worked with other high-profile clients including the United States Tennis Association and Black Entertainment Television.

The conference, sponsored by the Sports and Entertainment Law Students Association, will be held from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Oct. 27, in Armstrong Hall at the College of Law on the Tempe campus.

Athletes, physicians, agents, attorneys and anyone interested in athletics and the legal world are all invited to hear speakers from across the country discuss critical issues in the field of commercial sports, including ethics, pay-for-play, amateurism in athletics, medicine and gambling.

“It’s not just for law students,” said third-year law student Robbie Hendricks, SELSA vice president, who helped organize the event. “We want to reach out to more undergraduate students and anyone who has an interest in sports.”

Legal and business professionals will share their expertise along with athletes.

“It’s very exciting to have people like Jerry Colangelo,” Hendricks said. “His impact in Arizona is huge, he has great breadth of experience, and he’s dealt with all sorts of legal issues in sports.”

The player’s perspective will be represented by panelists like Scott Peters, an ASU alumni and former NFL offensive lineman, who will serve on a panel discussing concussions, other injuries and sports litigation.

“Scott Peters is another name people will recognize, and he brings valuable opinions and views on the issues,” Hendricks said. “Concussions are a hot topic right now, and the NFL has had hundreds of lawsuits recently.”

Medical experts, including David Dodick, a professor of neurology at the Mayo Clinic in Arizona, will share insights on injuries sustained in professional and amateur levels of sports.
