City of Tempe waterline project enters second phase May 13

Road construction

The City of Tempe continues to upgrade aging, and install new, water infrastructure around the ASU campus as part of the ASU Metering and Rural Road Waterline Project. The project is two-fold and includes installing a total of 17 new water meters along University Drive, Rural Road, Apache Boulevard and Mill Avenue and installing a 16-inch water main on Rural Road from Apache Boulevard to University Drive.

The installation of the water meters began April 8 and will continue through the end of October 2013. The first phase of the project, which is the installation of four meters on University Drive between College and McAllister avenues, is expected to be complete May 10. The second phase of the project, which includes installing more water meters and the installation of the water main will begin on Monday, May 13, and continue through the end of October.

Some of the meter installations may have minimal impact to the roadways with work taking place behind the curb line. Other meters will have significant impacts and cause major delays. Construction of the 16-inch water main will result in significant impacts and major delays on Rural Road for the duration of the project.

The following street closures and restrictions will be in place once the second phase begins on May 13:

• University Drive will be restricted to one lane in each direction from McAllister Avenue to just east of Rural Road from May 13 to June 24. Right turns will be allowed on all four approaches to Rural Road; however, no left-hand turns will be allowed northbound or southbound onto Rural Road.

• Rural Road will be restricted to one lane in each direction from Apache Boulevard to just north of University Drive from May 13 until October. One lane for northbound Rural to westbound University left-turning movements will be maintained. One lane for southbound Rural to eastbound University left-turning movements will also be maintained. Right hand turns will be permitted.

• 8th Street will be closed in both directions between Dorsey and Rural from May 13 to June 24.

These restrictions will be in place 24 hours a day and significant delays are likely. For any questions, please contact the project hotline at 480.898.4110. Learn more by visiting the City of Tempe website.
