Carson's Pac-12 Tournament freshman record leads ASU to overtime win over Stanford

Jahii Carson scored 21 of his career-high 34 points in the second half and overtime to lead Arizona State to a 89-88 win over Stanford in the first round of the Pac-12 Basketball Tournament, March 13.

Carrick Felix scored 19 points, Jonathan Gilling had 16 and Evan Gordon came off the bench to score 16 for the Sun Devils (21-11), who will play top seed UCLA in the quarterfinal round on March 14 (noon, PT on Pac-12 Networks).

Carson, who earlier this week was named the Pac-12's co-Freshman of the Year, set the record for most points scored by a freshman in a Pac-12 Tournament game.

It appeared all the momentum was with Stanford (18-14) after the Cardinal came back from an eight-point deficit in the final 75 seconds of regulation to tie the score at 79-79 and force overtime. Neither team was able to score for nearly the first 90 seconds of overtime until Dwight Powell put the Cardinal up 81-79 with 3:32 left to play.

Although the Sun Devils failed to score on their next two possessions, they were not allowing Stanford to extend its lead, setting the stage for Carson, whose 3-pointer with 2:09 left put the Sun Devils up 82-81.

ASU would continue to stymie the Cardinal on its ensuing possession as Chris Colvin came up with a steal. Carson converted the Stanford miscue into two points to extend ASU's lead to 84-81 with 1:05 left.

A layup by Josh Huestis cut ASU's lead to 84-83, but Gordon connected on a pair of free throws to once again put ASU up by three, 86-83.

Gilling came up with a steal on the opposite end and Gordon hit three-of-four free throws down the stretch to seal the win for ASU.
