ASU student awarded study abroad scholarship

ASU student Kara Horowitz has been named a recipient of the Dr. Carlos E. Castañeda Memorial Scholarship, sponsored by International Studies Abroad (ISA), a provider of study abroad programs in Latin America and Europe. Horowitz will receive a grant which will be applied to her "Spanish Language and Culture" study abroad program at the Pontifical Catholic University of Valparaíso in Chile this summer.

Castañeda, for whom the scholarship is named, was born in Camargo, Mexico in 1896 and immigrated to the United States with his family when he was in the sixth grade. Orphaned at the age of 14 Carlos became the head of the household. Self-educated, he eventually enrolled in the University of Texas (UT) where he earned his bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees. He served for 31 years at UT where he oversaw the prestigious Benson Latin American Collection and was an associate professor of history.

ISA honors Castañeda's memory and accomplishments with $40,000 annually in both merit and financial need-based scholarships.
