ASU Health Services building on top 10 list for most sustainable architecture
The ASU Health Services Building on the Tempe campus has been selected by the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and its Committee on the Environment (COTE) as one of the top 10 examples of sustainable architecture and green design solutions that protect and enhance the environment.
Located along the historic Palm Walk, the Health Services Building underwent a major renovation and expansion that was completed in March 2012. The renovation reduced environmental impacts through strategies such as reuse of existing structures, the use of low-impact and regenerative site development and sustainable construction materials.
Following highly sustainable practices throughout the course of the project, construction waste was diverted from landfills and reused whenever possible. Concrete from the old courtyard was sawn into blocks and repurposed into the landscaping, and bricks and recyclable materials from the building demolition were salvaged and used. The project has also been certified by the U.S. Green Building Council as LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Platinum, the council’s highest designation.
The award-winning building offers patients primary care and women’s health services, in addition to wellness-care services such as massage, acupuncture and chiropractic. Public spaces at the facility include semi-private indoor and outdoor waiting areas.
Okland Construction served as the construction manager for the project, and design firms Lake Flato and Orcutt-Winslow were the architects. The project was financed through ASU's student health fee.
As a member of the Mayo Clinic Care Network, ASU Health Services is dedicated to the well-being and educational success of each student, and offers: board-certified physicians and nurse practitioners; certified providers in sports medicine, emergency medicine, orthopedics, family medicine, gynecology, internal medicine, otolaryngology (ear, nose and throat), rheumatology, neurology, physical medicine and rehabilitation; and on-site pharmacy, X-ray and lab services. Convenient ASU Health Services locations are also available on the Downtown Phoenix, Polytechnic and West campuses.
