ASU community selects new costume for Sparky
After two weeks of voting, the people have spoken. Option B has been selected as the new face of the Sparky mascot costume.
More than 17,400 voters – including ASU students, staff, faculty, alumni, season ticket holders and Sun Devil Club members – weighed in on the decision. Voters were given a choice of four options, selected by student government leaders, the Sun Devil Coalition Advocacy Board, the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, the Alumni Board and Chapter Leaders, and representatives from the Sun Devil Club Board.
The winning choice was selected by more than 55 percent of the voters. The voting period ran from April 22 to May 5.
Option B was designed to most closely resemble the original 1946 drawing of Sparky, created by former Disney artist Berk Anthony. Since that time, the costumed version of Sparky has changed more than 12 times, including six since 2000.
The new costume will be used by the university this fall, starting with the beginning of the new semester in August.
