2 photographers, 2 angles at ASU Gammage

Photographers Mark Capurso of Peoria and Rhet Andrews of Phoenix will share gallery space at ASU Gammage May 31-June 28, offering two varying views of the Southwest and Europe.

Andrews, who began taking pictures in high school as a photographer for the Alliance (Ohio) High School Chronicle, will show photos from three themes: classical motel signs from Main Street in Mesa, Ariz.; historic automobiles; and travel photos from Europe.

All of the photos in Andrews’ exhibit are printed on silver gelatin paper from black and white negatives.

Andrews graduated from Miami University in Oxford Ohio, and spent three months photographing in Europe. For the next 20 years, he put his camera aside for “the reclusive world of stock brokerage,” he said. In 1999, he began photographing and printing once again, this time through the Phoenix Center Darkroom.

In November 2005 Andrews won Best in Show at the Phoenix Center Darkroom during the First Friday Art Show for his photo “Next Stop.” He plans to donate all proceeds from his Gammage exhibit to ASU Gammage.

Capurso will exhibit photos he has taken throughout the American Southwest in the past four years. “Aside from sharpening and minor color adjustments made in Adobe Photoshop, they have not been enhanced or altered in any way,” he said. “These photos have been processed to recreate the settings in the same way that my eyes saw them at the time they were captured.

“All the photos were taken within 30 minutes of sunrise or sunset, and in many cases, the spectacular lighting only lasted a minute or two.”
