How Global Launch helped ASU student build a career in supply chain management

When Zhexuan (Roy) Fan first arrived in Arizona from Hangzhou, China, he was amazed by the bright sunlight and unique landscape. “Arizona is very dry, with almost no rain, but its sunshine is incredibly bright. I feel excited every morning when I wake up and see the sun shining on the grass and sand in front of my door,” Fan recalls.
Fan’s journey to Arizona State University began with the goal of becoming an expert in supply chain management. Before Global Launch, he had already decided on this career path, drawn to the field’s ability to connect cultures and resources worldwide. After completing the ASU-USA Pathways program, he pursued a bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain Management at ASU’s W. P. Carey School of Business. Today, Fan is a supply production leader at Decathlon, having also earned another master’s degree from the University of Michigan and completed a management trainee program at L’Oréal.
Refining his skills at Global Launch
Like many international students, Fan faced challenges adapting to a new academic environment. With a TOEFL score of 55/120, he knew his English skills needed improvement. Global Launch’s ASU-USA Pathways program provided the perfect environment for growth. “The most important thing for me is that I learned how to find my style in a foreign country and integrate into the local community,” Fan said. “Language is never a difficulty in life, as long as I’m willing to express myself. Others are patient and willing to understand.”
Global Launch was more than an English program; it was Fan’s pathway to discovering his potential. He credits his professors, including Andrea Haraway, for helping him adapt to a completely new environment. “Andrea Haraway will always be my most important first professor,” Fan said.
He recalls struggling in a biology class during his first year. Studying an academic subject in English initially seemed like an impossible task. However, forming a self-study group with other students proved transformative. Through collaborative learning and perseverance, he achieved an impressive result, earning an A in the course. This experience taught him the value of effort and resilience, reinforcing his belief that determination can overcome challenges.
Beyond academics, Fan found an unexpected way to connect with others—through cooking. His culinary skills became a bridge to building friendships and creating a sense of community. Sharing meals allowed him to introduce his culture to others and foster meaningful connections, making his experience at ASU even more enriching.
Advice for future students
Reflecting on his journey at Global Launch, Fan emphasizes the importance of setting clear goals and staying focused. He encourages current and future Global Launch students to immerse themselves fully in the local environment, engage in campus activities and build diverse friendships.
“Having a clear goal is crucial. This program introduces you to excellent people from all walks of life, some of whom remain my lifelong friends. Don’t waste this opportunity—make the most of it,” Fan said.
Today, Fan continues to thrive in his career as a supply production leader at Decathlon. He views supply chain management as a vital field that integrates global resources and cultures, playing a key role in connecting the world. His experiences at ASU and Global Launch instilled in him a strong sense of confidence and resilience—qualities that continue to shape his success today.
“Only when people step out of their comfort zone can they truly discover their potential,” Fan said. Each challenge he faced, from adapting to a new culture to mastering a second language, made him more independent, confident and prepared for the future. His story is a testament to the power of education and determination in achieving one’s dreams.
