ASU FIDM Museum hosts Academy Awards season costume design speaker series

Arianne Phillips, the costume designer for the the Bob Dylan biopic "A Complete Unknown," will be one of the featured speakers in the series.

The ASU FIDM Museum is celebrating awards season with its Academy Awards Season Costume Design Speaker Series, featuring conversations with Oscar-winning and nominated designers about the art and evolution of film costume design.

The series began Feb. 4 with a conversation featuring two-time Academy Award-winning costume designer Mark Bridges, known for his work on "Phantom Thread" and "The Artist." Bridges discussed his design philosophy, the role of archival research in his work, and his passion for fashion history. Attendees also had the opportunity to view select pieces from the ASU FIDM Museum’s collection, including vintage film costumes and 1950s couture.

The series continues with three upcoming events:

Feb. 11 | A Conversation with Arianne Phillips
Three-time Academy Award-nominee Arianne Phillips, whose credits include "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood," "Walk the Line" and "W.E.," will discuss her career in film and fashion, including her latest project, the Bob Dylan biopic "A Complete Unknown."

Feb. 18 | Collaborative Costume Design Industry Panel
A panel of leading costume designers and concept artists will discuss the collaborative nature of film costume design and the role of technology in the industry. Panelists include Antoinette Messam ("The Book of Clarence," "The Harder They Fall"), Daniel Selon ("Agatha All Along," "WandaVision") and Phillip Boutte Jr. ("Wicked," "Black Panther").

March 4 | Luxury Vintage on the Red Carpet
ASU FIDM professor and fashion journalist Joe Zee will be joined by Lauren Lepire, owner of Timeless Vixen, to discuss the role of luxury vintage fashion on the red carpet, vintage trends over the past decade and the unique challenges of styling celebrity clientele.

The events will take place at the ASU FIDM Museum at the ASU California Center Grand in Los Angeles. Admission is free for students and the public, with registration required for select events. Visit the ASU FIDM Museum website for more information and to RSVP.
