Announced on October 14, The Case Centre has named Thunderbird School of Global Management at Arizona State University Professor Kannan Ramaswamy to its coveted ‘top 50 bestselling case authors’ list for 2023/2024. Since 2016, The Case Centre has published an annual list of the top 50 bestselling case authors. These awardees are teaching faculty whose cases sell the most copies during the previous academic year. Coming in at number 43 out of 50 is Kannan Ramaswamy, William D. Hacker Chair Professor of Management. This recognition is the first time a Thunderbird author has placed in the top 50, and it comes on the heels of an impressive year for Thunderbird’s case series.

In March 2024, Thunderbird was recognized by The Case Centre's Impact Index 2023 as one of the top producers of case studies, having claimed the No. 20 position in the world and No. 7 in the U.S. for its global reach and impact of faculty case writing.

The Case Centre also previously announced Euvin Naidoo, distinguished professor of practice of global accounting, risk and agility at Thunderbird, as its 2024 Outstanding Case Teacher for his commitment to innovation and excellence in case teaching.

“Kannan’s work exemplifies Thunderbird’s spirit of innovation and global engagement. His dedication to advancing the understanding of business dynamics across emerging and developed markets is a tremendous source of pride for our school,” said Charla Griffy-Brown, director general and dean of Thunderbird. “We are thrilled to see his profound impact on management education recognized on this prestigious platform.”

Professor Ramaswamy has a long and accomplished track record of research and teaching in global strategy. His current research primarily focuses on the energy transition and the role of the energy majors, the centrality of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) initiatives in emerging markets, and the continued evolution of emerging market multinationals. His research has appeared in all the top tier journals in both strategy and international business such as the Academy of Management Journal, Strategic Management Journal, Journal of International Business Studies, Management International Review, and Organization Science. His research has won ‘best paper’ awards multiple times at the Academy of Management and the Academy of International Business. He has consulted for several Asian, U.S. and European multinationals, and is an award-winning executive educator.

He teaches the core course in competitive strategy and an elective course in global strategy in the graduate programs at Thunderbird. His course on Global Strategy has been consistently ranked as the ‘most valuable’ course by alumni for well over a decade, and he has been voted ‘most outstanding professor’ by the student body over 20 times in his Thunderbird career.

His case writing spans multiple industries ranging from energy and food to haute couture and grocery retailing —and tend to explore the nuances of strategic decision making in contexts as diverse as the United States, China, Brazil, Russia, Japan, and India international markets. His bestselling cases of 2023/2024 are: ‘Where's the Beef? Beyond Meat, Impossible Foods and the Alternative Meat Industry,’ ‘Singapore International Airlines: Strategy with a Smile,’ and ‘The Digital Transformation of Kroger: Remaking the Grocery Business.’

“In my view, a case is a vehicle that takes readers on an intellectual journey where they get to walk in the shoes of a CEO or a manager making critical decisions. That journey is all the more enriched if I can expose them to a variety of business decisions, set in diverse cultural and market environments where some of their own decision-making biases are challenged,” says Ramaswamy. “I want them to remember the case not just for the story, but more importantly for the concepts that it taught them.”

As the world’s leading independent hub and leader of all management schools for cases, The Case Centre is dedicated to advancing the case method worldwide by sharing knowledge, wisdom and experience, and inspiring and transforming business education across the globe.
