Thunderbird-Soochow dual master’s degree provides immersive, international experience for nearly two decades
A partnership between Thunderbird School of Global Management and Soochow University has provided students a unique, global perspective for 17 years.
For over 17 years, Soochow University, Taiwan’s leading private institution, and Thunderbird School of Global Management at Arizona State University, have collaborated to offer a unique dual-degree pathway through the 1+1 program. This initiative allows students to begin their studies in Soochow University’s Global Business Program before transitioning to Thunderbird for their second year. Graduates earn degrees from both institutions, equipping them with the global perspective and skills needed to succeed in today’s interconnected world.
With Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company’s (TSMC) expansion into Arizona, the demand for globally educated talent has never been greater. The cross-cultural experiences and international insights provided by programs like the Soochow-Thunderbird partnership are crucial in preparing students to meet the growing needs of industries locally and beyond.
This March, Lena Booth, deputy dean of Thunderbird Academic Enterprise, led a group of Executive Master of Global Management (EMGM) students on a week-long field seminar in Taiwan. This immersive experience provided students with firsthand exposure to Taiwan’s dynamic industries, including visits to TSMC, Acer and other prominent companies in the region. The seminar also featured insights from Stan Shih, chairman of the StanShih Foundation, co-founder and honorary chairman of the Acer Group, and a professor of practice at Thunderbird.
Shih’s discussions on Taiwan’s critical role in global business left a lasting impression on the participants. Shih also shared his Wangdao philosophy during the seminar, emphasizing the importance of a holistic approach to leadership that integrates innovation, empathy, and sustainability.
“True leadership goes beyond business success. It is about harmonizing progress with purpose, ensuring that innovation benefits not just the few but the many,” said Shih.
Director General and Dean Charla Griffy-Brown of Thunderbird added, “This field seminar exemplifies Thunderbird’s commitment to providing transformative global experiences. By engaging directly with industry leaders and cultural innovators, our students gain the insights and skills needed to navigate and lead in today’s complex global landscape.”
One of the seminar attendees, Christian Hector Leon, a Mexican national who grew up in the United States, is also an EMGM graduate and president of Equality Health’s Arizona Market. Captivated by Taiwan’s business vitality and cultural richness, Leon decided to deepen his family’s connection to the region. He enrolled his two sons, Christian Emiliano Leon, an ASU senior and pre-med student, and Hector Andres Leon, a freshman at ASU, in Soochow University’s Mandarin Immersion program. Both sons found the experience enriching, gaining not only language skills but also a deeper understanding of Taiwan’s heritage. As proud Mexican-Americans, the Leon family demonstrates a deep desire to embrace diverse cultures and languages, adding Mandarin to their linguistic repertoire and becoming trilingual in an increasingly interconnected world.
“Being able to dive into the culture of Taiwan and learn its language and traditions was great. Many people were welcoming and open, so it wasn’t difficult starting a new conversation with somebody. Despite being there for the summer, we thought it went rather faster than expected. No better way to learn about a culture than to submerge yourself into it,” said the Leon brothers.
The Leon family’s journey with Thunderbird didn’t stop there. Inspired by the EMGM program and driven by his dedication to increasing health care access for underserved communities, Christian Hector Leon recently enrolled in the Doctor of Professional Practice in Global Leadership and Management (DPP) at Thunderbird.
“The education I received at Thunderbird broadened my perspective in ways I never anticipated—both personally and professionally. This journey was more than just advancing my career; it was about immersing myself in diverse cultures and developing a global mindset, which is crucial for driving change in healthcare and serving diverse communities. Continuing with the (DPP) program is the next step in my mission to make a real impact, and I’m excited to start this new chapter with the same passion and commitment that guided me here. As we say, 'T-birds keep flying,'” said Christian Hector Leon.
“Our partnership with Thunderbird exemplifies our shared commitment to delivering an education that prepares students to excel in an increasingly globalized environment. The 1+1 program offers a unique opportunity for students to gain a comprehensive and culturally enriched education” said Chyan - Long Jan, president of Soochow University.
