For 30 years, the Arizona State University Graduate College has honored faculty members for their exemplary service and commitment to graduate education through recognition at its Outstanding Faculty Mentor Awards.
In keeping with this dedication to the significance of mentorship in graduate education, the Graduate College is excited to announce the creation of the Graduate Faculty Mentor Academy.
The purpose of the Graduate Faculty Mentor Academy is to recognize, establish and promote standards for the role of mentoring among faculty, graduate students and postdoctoral scholars at ASU. Members of the academy will advance best practices for mentoring graduate students and postdoctoral scholars, for mentoring teaching assistants and for recognizing excellence and innovations in mentoring.
According to Amanda Athey, director of Graduate Student Support Resources in the Graduate College, “We have so many talented faculty mentors at ASU, it was important for us to involve them more directly into our programming. What better way to improve our graduate student mentoring program than by asking faculty to play a leading role.”
Academy membership will include prior Outstanding Faculty Mentor Award recipients and faculty recognized by deans for leadership in mentoring graduate students. Future Outstanding Faculty Mentor Award recipients will be invited to become members of the academy as well.
“Committed mentors are very important for graduate students because they serve as models for research and career advancement as well as important interpersonal support,” noted Graduate School Dean Alfredo J. Artiles. “Launching the Faculty Mentor Academy is the next step in the Graduate College’s efforts to build a strong culture for mentoring graduate students at ASU.”
