ASU Art Museum and Valley firefighter work with children to discuss 9-11, honor local heros

TEMPE, Ariz. – As we approach the first anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, ASU Art Museum is partnering with Valley firefighters to provide school children with educational and creative outlets for their feelings about the tragedy. Participants in the program will also honor local emergency service personnel through the creation of their own artwork.

Children from schools in Phoenix and Tempe will visit the ASU Art Museum exhibition, Aftermath (9/11): Photographs by Janis Lewin, which presents photographs taken by New York artist Janis Lewin after the fall of the World Trade Center’s Twin Towers. The exhibition runs Aug. 17 – Oct. 20.

The 9/11 tours are part of the museum’s free art education program. In addition to the museum visit and docent-led discussion of the exhibition and the events it portrays, the children will receive a visit from a Phoenix or Tempe firefighter at their school.

Following the firefighter’s visit, the children will create artwork portraying local heroes, such as police and firefighters. These images will then be presented to local emergency service personnel as gifts of appreciation from the children during the museum’s 9/11 memorial event at noon on Sept. 11.
