As many freshmen are looking forward to the end of their first semester at college, Sabrina Haines' freshman campaign is just getting started — in some ways. The guard on ASU's women's basketball team started official practices with the team in October and this month played her first game as a student-athlete at ASU. It came against the Kentucky Wildcats in Wells Fargo Arena in Tempe.
The photos from the game and Haines' practices with the team are part of "Year One: Life at ASU," a periodic photo series following five freshmen through their first year at ASU.
November is a time when many students are starting to wrap things up before winter break, but Sabrina Haines' life is just getting busy with the start of basketball season. Here the freshmen on ASU's women's basketball team runs through drills with her teammates during practice at Wells Fargo Arena on Nov. 5.

One fact that not many know is that the women's basketball team practices against men. These men are ASU students who commit to the schedule and requirements of the team much like the women. Here, Haines gets the best of one of these guys as she puts up a shot.

Repetition breeds success. At least, that's the theory with free throws, one of the game's more isolated actions. Haines practices her touch as she looks forward to the season.

The life of a student-athlete is busy, busy, busy. Which explains why Haines is running to her next committment after basketball practice.

And ... it's game time. Senior guard Arnecia Hawkins goes in for a basket during the Sun Devils' opening game against Kentucky at Wells Fargo Arena on Nov. 15. The game came down to overtime, when Kentucky defeated the Sun Devils 68-64.

Haines waits to check into the game for her first action as a student-athlete at ASU. Not all freshmen get to play their first season. And even though she played only 3 minutes, it shows that the coaching staff has some trust in her.
